World Environment Day: Together we make a positive difference!
This moment reminds us that every day should be an environmental day. At Velda we like to bring this to the fore – because the environment is always at the heart of our business.
5 June 1972 is an important milestone: on that day in Stockholm, the ‘United Nations Conference on the Human Environment’ began. 1000 representatives from more than 100 countries came together to put the environment on the world agenda for the first time. Also this year, 150 states will present their initiatives during this conference on 5 June and in this way try to create more awareness of this subject among the world’s population.
A positive difference
In the end, everything starts with us. After all, we are responsible for the way we treat nature and its resources. As individuals, but also as companies, we can make a positive difference. Reducing CO2 emissions, avoiding waste and recycling, reusing raw materials, buying locally, green energy – we hold the key to protecting and preserving the environment.
Climate change, global warming and the depletion of raw materials are matters of genuine concern to us. How we, as a company, can do our bit is central to us. Sustainable entrepreneurship has never been so important. At Velda we make our contribution to a more sustainable future every day. As a family business, it is in our DNA to care for each other and the society we live in. We do this with all our hearts. It is our main focus and has been since 1954.
At the end of 2021, we made this sustainable vision concrete in three clear pillars that characterise us as a company and give us direction: Honest care, Clear impact and Conscious product.

A step ahead through innovation.
Every year, around 900,000 new mattresses are bought in Belgium, and just as many old ones end up in landfills. Together, they account for 8 to 9 percent of household waste that is incinerated or dumped. Traditional mattresses cannot be recycled. As a box spring and mattress manufacturer, it is only logical for us to offer a solution to this waste problem. Our own atelier is driven by innovation and consciously focuses on sustainable alternatives. We see this as an opportunity to be a pioneer in the bedding sector and to call a halt to the waste problem. This is how our circular bed concept vel_you was born, a brand name that contains the word value. Value, that’s what it’s all about in more ways than one. Think of the revaluation of the raw materials, but also of the sustainability that is built into this product as a value and the value that this product creates for society.
What’s in it for me?
Making consumers aware of environmental issues remains a huge challenge. Also in the field of sleeping comfort, we noticed that the majority of consumers do not (yet) lose any sleep over circularity. When it comes to the purchase of a new mattress or boxspring, sustainability is still a nice-to-have factor, secondary to price/quality and comfort.
But the circular design of vel_you brought with it another very important feature: modularity! With vel_you we significantly extend the life of the mattress by exchanging parts. As a result, the customer enjoys a constant comfort level and saves a lot of budget. Our sustainable assembly method without glue or staples makes it possible to adjust and upgrade the mattress at any time. If your mattress is hard, the comfort layer can be changed. So you always enjoy superior sleeping comfort that is kind on your wallet. Year after year.
Vel_you is also our value model to make the entire collection 100% circular by 2040. This is what drives us and we are convinced that we will succeed in our goal. Let’s all, not just on 5 June, take matters into our own (green) hands. If we all take small steps, this can lead to a big impact on our environment.
